Nice weather, so another spur-of-the-moment rock climbing trip to Castle Rock State Park , water falls which is an easy hike off Skyline Blvd in the south bay, and where one can find an abundance of what are called Tafoni formations - basically nooks and caves weathered into sandstone. Given that it was Memorial Day weekend, it was surprisingly uncrowded; when we first got to the waterfalls there was no one else climbing.
The thumbnail above is a sketch of the rock face we ended up climbing showing the designated routes from the book "Rock Climbing Guide to the Castle Rock Area", by Bruce Morris - who also has a book out on bouldering in this area. Unfortunately, the sketches of the routes are a little ambiguous - I think we at least started routes B (Above the Law), and C (Clamydia), though we ended up bailing on both.
Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so all the pictures were taken with my iphone. But you can click on any thumbnail below to see a bigger version. You will need a window that is at least 800x800 pixels to see the bigger version and captions without scrolling. Once you've brought up the first picture, you can either press the back button to get back to this thumbnails page, or you can use the left/right arrows at the top of every page to sequentially view the rest of the pictures in full screen format. The up arrow will return you to this page.
