Coyote Point Summer Biathlon - 30 March 2003 Race ResultsThe following are the results from the San Mateo Summer Biathlon held at Coyote Point County Park. For those of you who are interested, the pictures are posted here. The results are sorted first by sex, then by name. DNS means that a pre-registered racer did not start - e.g. due to illness, homeland defense commitments, or volunteer commitments. If you are owed an award and were not present at the award ceremony, I will be mailing them out shortly. If you have any comments on/suggestions for future race prizes (keep them reasonable - this race is entirely funded on your entry fees!) I'd like to hear about them - my email address is at the bottom of the page.
For this race, we had some gorgeous views of the bay - Mt. Diablo 30 miles away was clearly visible, temperatures, were in the high 60's for the race, and 70's for the shoot-off. Not even a breeze in the range. As close to perfect weather as you can get.
We tried a new format for the shoot-off. Rather than using knockdown metal targets, standard paper scoring targets were set at 10 yards. Everyone was allowed one minute to take as many shots as they could get off. Winners were determined by total score - hits in the center were worth ten points, next ring out was nine points, and so forth. Sound like it should be easy to get a high score by just peppering the paper with shots? Not when you have to manually load pellets and pump the rifle to take a shot! Most people got off two shots; one managed five. Eight people out of the twenty four who shot didn't even hit the scoring rings. The winner was Jonathon Dee with a total score of 15, second was Lou Morton with a score of fourteen, and third was Marciano Pitargue with a score of 11.
Thanks to all the RSOs of the Coyote Point Rifle and Pistol Range for running the shooting clinic and helping with range set-up and teardown, Dave Evans for doing the race start, data entry, setting up computers, and tabulating results (in record time!), Wally and Liese Rapozo for shopping, laying out the course, helping with Rifle zero, and range set-up, Dean Gilardi for helping with rifle zero, John Keen for helping with finish timing, Steve Perez who helped with final clean-up and loading equipment after the race, and all of you who helped direct traffic, help with food, and sundry other tasks whom I have to apologize - I can't remember your names. The race would not have come off without all of your help and participation.
