Shots from Coyote Point

Summer Biathlon

September 29, 2002

This page updated 31 October 2002

This is probably one of the most photographed races at Coyote Point. There are three pages of picture thumbnails for this race - this one which I took, a page of semi-professional photos by Burt Alcantara, and a set by Silas Kwok. The pictures taken by Burt Alcantara can be seen by clicking here. The pictures taken by Silas Kwok can be seen by clicking here. I highly recommend that you take the time to peruse them as well.

This Summer Biathlon was organized by Allen Takahashi. The race took place in the San Francisco Bay Area not far from the San Francisco airport. The weather was nearly perfect as usual - no wind, temperatures in the upper sixties, clear (for awhile, it looked like we had the only clear patch of sky for miles around) and dry. Roughly forty biathletes ran the course, and participated in the post race shoot-off, food, and awards ceremony. The results are posted here.

For this race, we had a combination of good air rifles, targets, coordination, and stiff competition for the post-race shoot-off. Vying for speed and accuracy against twelve of the best shooters who registered for the race, James Han won the post-race air rifle shoot-off. Catherine Jolly took second place, Eric Tam took third, and Joe Neff took fourth in the shoot-off.

Thanks to all the RSOs of the Coyote Point Rifle and Pistol Range for running the clinic and helping with range set-up, Burt Alcantara for race pictures, Paul McCandles for doing registration, Joe Mucelli for obtaining air rifles and targets for the shoot-off and running the shoot-off, Dave Evans for doing the race start, data entry, setting up computers, and tabulating results (in record time!), Dave Bonds two friends for doing race finish, Raul Salem for general help, Wally and Liese Rapozo for shopping, laying out the course, helping with Rifle zero, and range set-up, Mike Norton for helping me clean up trail markers, and all of you who did various errands and stayed to help clean up the range after the race. The race would not have come off without all of your help and participation.

The following pictures were taken with aNikon 950 digital camera. Your computer monitor color depth needs to be set to thousands for the colors to look reasonable. This page may take several minutes to load if you have a slow connection. Click on a picture to see the full-sized version. Once you've brought up the first full picture, you can either press the back button to get back to the thumbnails page, or you can use the left/right arrows at the top of the page to sequentially view the rest of the pictures in full screen format. The up arrow should return you to this page. By the way, if you run Internet Explorer on Windows 3.1, I've had some problems with pictures not coming up properly.
