The West Yellowstone Summer Biathlon was organized by Marc Sheppard. (Thanks for the pre-race carbo-load, and a well organized race Marc!) The race took place just outside Yellowstone National Park, in Montana. This is a very scenic venue , and features all dirt trails. The range had targets set at 50m - and they were the heavy winter targets, rather than the summer targets. The weatherwas very cooperative - no wind, and comfortable temps. This, and the Boseman Summer Biathlon which occurred the day before are one of the ten National Series races which are used to determine National Team selection, based on a points system and criteria described on the USBA web page . The turnout was good - probably close to one hundred biathletes, and the field was quite competitive. A lot of the biathletes competed in both races, as did a group of us from California/Nevada.
How did I do? Well at least I showed up at the start line on time, unlike the race the day before, where I was still checking out the scenery when my bib number was called, but about two minutes before the start, I suddenly realized I was wearing my sandals and not my running shoes, which I had left in the car - which was parked over five minutes away. Duhhh! Fortunately, one of the biathletes had a spare set of shoes which were reasonably close in size. (By the way, thanks - I don't remember who you were).
Your computer monitor color depth needs to be set to thousands for the colors or the pictures will not look right. This page may take a minute to load at 28.8 K baud. Click on a thumbnail picture to see the full-sized version. I used a moderate amount of compression on even the full-sized pictures in the interests of keeping my disk storage space and download times reasonable - the original pictures are noticeably better. Even with compression, the file sizes are roughly on the order of 80k/ picture - the originals are over 800k/picture. Hope you enjoy them! By the way, if you can think of better captions, or if you have pictures you'd like to share, mail them to me at allenbt@biathlon.net.
